Guarding Heads. Saving Lives.
Every year, around 400,000 motorcyclists die in traffic worldwide: they represent 28%* of the total number of fatal road accidents.
And at least 75% of these are caused by head injuries, due to unsafe helmets and poor crash response.
We are going to change this.
In fact, we have made it our mission.
THIS IS OUR MISSION
In the next 10 years, we will reduce the annual number of motorcyclists killed in road accidents by at least 30%. This will save tens of thousands of lives each year.
On the one hand, this means that tens of thousands of people can return to their families every year. On the other hand, we annually save society billions of euros.
In addition to collecting and analysing data, we share our knowledge for the purpose of increasing safety for motorcyclists. One of the ways we do this is by sharing our knowledge and insights on what makes a helmet safe (7 factors) with motorcyclists, governments, emergency services, insurance companies and helmet and motorbike brands all over the world.
Publicly, because we believe that our life-saving knowledge and experience should be accessible to everyone.
WHAT MAKES A HELMET – ANY HELMET – SAFE?
Based on extensive research, the CASTODIAN Foundation has determined the 7 factors of helmet safety.
A helmet is only safe for you (and for you alone!) if it meets all of the following 7 factors.
IS CERTIFIED
“Homologation” is an accreditation issued by an official body, certifying the helmet as being safe for its intended use.
HAS NO DAMAGE OR DEFECT
A helmet – any helmet, for any application – is only safe if the helmet is free from damage or defects, however minimal they may seem.
IS NOT OLDER THAN 7 YEARS
A helmet is constantly exposed to influences that reduce its safety: from no later than 7 years after production date, a helmet, worn or not, is ‘’expired‘’ and thus no longer safe.
FITS SEAMLESSLY
A safe helmet, no matter the application, is a helmet that always and everywhere fits tightly around the skull and face.
IS USED PROPERLY
From use to maintenance, a helmet is only safe when it is used properly, as described in the instruction manual.
IS CLEAN AND HYGIENIC
A safe helmet is a helmet that is clean and hygienic, both on the outside and inside of the helmet.
IS VISIBLE
Whatever weather conditions you drive in, whatever time of day and whatever vehicle you use, a safe helmet is a helmet that is always highly visible.
IS CERTIFIED
“Homologation” is an accreditation issued by an official body declaring the helmet safe for use.
IS NOT OLDER THAN 7 YEARS
A helmet is permanently exposed to influences that reduce the safety of the helmet: a helmet is in principle “expired” after 7 years from the date of its production, worn or not.
IS USED PROPERLY
From use to maintenance, a helmet must be used properly, as described in the instruction manual.
HAS NO DAMAGE OR DEFECT
A helmet is only safe if the helmet is free of damage or defects, however minimal they may seem.
FITS SEAMLESSLY
A helmet should always and everywhere fit tightly around the skull and face. This is extremely important!
IS CLEAN AND HYGIENIC
A safe helmet is clean and hygienic, on the outside and on the inside of the helmet.
IS VISIBLE
No matter the weather conditions, during the day or night, your helmet should always be visible to others.
TIME FOR CHANGE
It is high time for this knowledge to be widely disseminated among motorcyclists and stakeholders all over the world. On the one hand, this way we annually help tens of thousands of people to return to their families. On the other hand, we save society billions of euros every year. Will you help?

WHAT WE DO
To accomplish our mission, we organise meetings, we devise campaigns, we speak at conferences and we work together among others with NGOs, governments and of course other motorcyclists. We speak, teach and campaign on a national and international level.
AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE
We have an important message. A message that potentially saves thousands of lives every year. A message that should be heard – No, MUST be heard. That’s why we do everything we can to get our message out, including news and blog posts, videos and podcasts.
